Every future doctor starts somewhere. For Dakota Okwuone and Jada McMahon, that journey included attending the Congress of Future Medical Leaders as high school students. Today, they are pursuing careers that will shape the future of healthcare, research, and patient care.

Dakota attended the Congress as a sophomore in high school with a passion for science and a curiosity about medicine. The experience inspired him to explore medical research and ultimately pursue the physician-scientist path.

Jada attended the Congress during a pivotal moment in high school when she was deciding her future. Seeing young innovators and medical professionals succeed helped her realize that a career in medicine was within reach.

Dakota Okwuone arrived at the Congress as a high school sophomore from Olathe, Kansas, with a strong interest in science but no clear roadmap for how his interests could translate into a career.

During the event, he listened to groundbreaking thinkers like Craig Venter and Peter Diamandis discuss the future of medicine, innovation, and scientific discovery. For the first time, he saw the enormous possibilities within healthcare and realized he wanted to contribute to that future himself.

The experience became a turning point.

Soon after attending the Congress, Dakota sought out research opportunities at the University of Kansas and began exploring what it truly meant to advance medicine through scientific discovery. His growing passion for research eventually led him to pursue both medicine and science at the highest level.

Today, Dakota is a fourth-year medical student in the M.D.-Ph.D. Physician Scientist Training Program at the University of Kansas Medical School, preparing for a career that combines patient care, research, and medical innovation.

Dakota's journey demonstrates how a single experience can spark years of growth. What began as curiosity about medicine evolved into a commitment to research, leadership, and improving patient care.

The inspiration Dakota gained at the Congress didn't end when the event concluded. It helped shape the academic, research, and service opportunities he continues to pursue today.

Jada McMahon's interest in medicine was deeply personal. After losing her mother to breast cancer, she saw firsthand the impact compassionate healthcare professionals can have on patients and families.

As a high school senior, Jada attended the Congress while making important decisions about her future. Although she was interested in medicine, she still questioned whether she truly belonged in the field.

At the Congress, she found her answer.

Hearing from physicians, researchers, and young innovators helped her see that meaningful contributions to science and healthcare were possible at any age. Just as importantly, she saw people she could relate to succeeding in medicine, making the profession feel more accessible and attainable.

The experience strengthened her confidence and solidified her decision to pursue medicine.

Today, Jada is a Psychiatry Resident at Yale School of Medicine, a recipient of a full scholarship to SUNY Upstate Medical University, and the first-ever recipient of the Dr. Sarah Loguen Fraser Dean's Student Distinction Award.

Jada's accomplishments reflect years of hard work, determination, and commitment to serving others. The confidence she gained early on helped her pursue opportunities that would shape her future in medicine.

Dakota and Jada followed different paths, but both found inspiration, direction, and confidence through the Congress. Their stories show that there is no single route to success in medicine.
