When it comes to decisions making, what strategies do you employ? Do you go with intuitive decision-making, rational decision-making, or strategic decision-making? Because there are so many things to consider, it can be a real challenge to select the best option. But don’t worry, we are here to help you. Read on to learn the various practical ways you can make the right choice.
Decisions Making In Life: Always Go For The Right Choice
Making A Decision
When making a decision, you may be thinking about the things your parents, teachers, or friends are encouraging you to do. These may be what you’re fearful of doing or what you simply don’t want to do.
These people in your life may be asking you to re-frame your thoughts and consider the benefits of the opportunities you have. The bottom line is, they are encouraging you to make a decision as a way to help you get to where you want to be. However, be mindful that you make your own decisions that will ultimately effect the success of your life.
Now let’s talk about several practical decision-making styles that will help you make the right choices. You can use these for many situations you are faced with, whether it’s something you want to do or something you are hesitating on. Remember, your time is valuable, so you shouldn’t linger on opportunities that aren’t going to build you up and set you up for success.
Decisions Making: The Seven, Seven, Seven Rule
In decision-making, we have what we call the “Seven, Seven, Seven Rule”. Here, you make a decision based on three indicating factors. You think about how the outcome of your choice will affect you seven minutes from now, seven months from now, and seven years from now.
This may seem like you’re looking too far into the future. But really, you are only being realistic by looking at the big picture. A choice may seem good at the moment, but it can create a lasting impact. So, through this decision-making process, you can gauge if a choice will be good or bad for you in the long run.
Decisions Making: The Three Biases
Whenever you’re about to make a choice, you need to be careful because your own mind can trick you. In science, they are called “Biases”. When you let them influence your decision-making approach, they may not lead you to the best opportunities. Let me share with you how you can avoid becoming tricked by the three kinds of biases.
The Confirmation Bias
When we say “Confirmation Bias,” this means that your mind wants to confirm your existing beliefs. The danger here is that not all information that aligns with your beliefs is actually true or right.
So how do you overcome this? For instance, you are presented with an opportunity that sounds good. Rationalize it by thinking, “Okay, this is a good idea. Now why is this a bad idea?” Make your decision after you answer this question.
The Framing Effect
The Framing Effect happens when you make a decision based on how the information is framed for you. So to avoid becoming tricked by this, you re-frame the information you receive in a different light.
For example, if someone tells you something in a positive way, re-frame it in a negative way. Try to see the other side of the coin. This way, you will know how a certain decision can affect you in both a positive and a negative way.
Go through the re-framing process even for situations even when it’s more appealing to only see one side or the other. Ask yourself, “This is a negative thing, why could this be a positive thing? How could this help me?”
The Hindsight Bias
With the Hindsight Bias, you let prior knowledge affect your present decision-making. In turn, your choice will have an impact on your future. It is good to note that past experiences can make you complacent. And they can lead you to assume that you will end up with the same familiar results, but that’s not what always happens.
To avoid making a mistake brought about by the Hindsight Bias, try to see the big picture. Use this thought process to make a decision: “This has worked out well for me in the past. Why might the future be different than the past? Why might it not work out?”
Whenever you make a choice, take the time to slow down and ask yourself, “How big is this decision? And how much is it truly going to affect me?”
Decisions Making: Ask For Opinion
Another helpful way to make a decision is to ask for trusted opinion. You can approach your parents, teachers, or friends and get their feedback. This can be very helpful as they may bring up something you weren’t considering before. They can also help you make informed choices.
Get their advice by asking these questions: “I’ve been thinking about doing this. Do you think this is a great opportunity? Should I take advantage of this? What’s your advice? I think this is great, but am I not seeing the other side of the coin here?”
Don’t be afraid to consider everything, because your time is valuable. Make sure that you’re putting every moment of your time to good use.

Get to know her better as she shares how the Congress led her to new and exciting opportunities.

A High Achiever
Hannah Mims attends Chilton County High School in Clanton, Alabama. At the same time, she is part of the University of Montevallo’s Upward Bound program. It mainly caters to students whose parents did not go to college. The program also provides scholarship assistance to its members.
With the Upward Bound program, Hannah has been given an opportunity to experience the college life. So she maximizes this by taking classes at the campus for three days each month. She is even able to go to college during the summer, even while still in high school.
The Big Dreams That Led to Opportunities
To her pleasant surprise, the profile she created opened doors for her. Colleges reached out and invited her to visit their campuses. This also led her to cross paths with the National Academy of Future Physicians and Medical Scientists.
Hannah received an invitation to attend the Congress of Future Medical Leaders. Out of the thousands of students around the country, she was selected to become a delegate. Hannah could not have predicted it then, but the Congress turned out to be life-changing for her.

At first, Hannah wasn’t even sure if she would be able to attend the Congress. But her family supported her, and her father drove for almost 20 hours just so she could make it.
At the Congress, she discovered that she shared her co-delegates’ interests. Hannah also got to know the Congress leaders. Universities that offer medical programs had representatives at the event. So, Hannah was able to explore and get information on various medical fields. She also received tips on college applications.
The Congress featured medical speakers, and delegates attended talks on surgery and cancer treatment. Hannah’s personal favorites were the doctors who discussed face transplants and patient resuscitation. But for her, the best part of the Congress was hearing the speakers discuss their accomplishments and how they got there. The different views presented were what engaged her.
Hannah is grateful that she was able to go to the Congress. She enjoyed her time at the event, and loved the experience. As she says, the Congress “turned her life around.”
As one of the Congress of Future Medical Leaders alumni, Hannah was also given a special accolade. She received the Award of Excellence from the National Academy of Future Physicians and Medical Scientists. With this, the Academy recognized her efforts as one of the Congress participants.
Soaring to Greater Heights
Before attending the Congress, Hannah admitted that she “didn’t even know” if she will be able to attend college. But after her time at the conference, she now has a “better idea” of how she can pursue higher education.
Her experience at the Congress encouraged her to aim for scholarships. She became more driven to get better grades and to be involved in extra-curricular activities.
She is well on her way to achieving her dream of pursuing a career in the medical field. Hannah’s perseverance proves that no goal is too hard when you are determined to reach it.

The Principles of Persuasion
When you want something, you have your own ways to persuade people. You may have had experiences in trying to influence your family and friends to agree to what you want.
Believe it or not, you can actually learn this skill. There are techniques that can change everything for you. When you use them, people are more inclined to agree with what you’re asking them to do. How cool is that?
We can break them down into six different principles of persuasion:
- Reciprocity — the obligation to return the favor, service or gift received
- Scarcity — the natural desire to get what you can’t have or what is hard to obtain
- Authority — trust in following thought leaders and authorities
- Consistency — the habits formed that increase the willingness to commit
- Liking — saying yes to people you like
- Consensus — referring to the actions of others to help shape your own decisions
Those six points that we discussed are considered universal principles. You can utilize each of them to increase your influence. Let’s dig a little deeper on these principles of influence.
This principle is also known as the “social obligation.” When somebody does something nice for you, especially if it is unexpected, you feel the need to return the favor.
To reap the benefits of reciprocity, you need to make a little more effort. Be the first one to offer something — it could be a gift or a service. The principle of reciprocity will work better if what you offer is personalized and not expected of you.
Knowing what you stand to lose when you don’t grab an opportunity can haunt you. And that is where this principle comes from.
Naturally, we want to have what we cannot get more of. For instance, the words “limited edition” are likely to attract customers much like the word “sale.” Scarcity places a sense of urgency on people. It pushes them to make a quick decision whether to take or leave what is being offered to them.
So when you apply this principle, make sure that you highlight the losses as much as the benefits.
When others recognize your expertise and your credibility, they are more inclined to agree with you. To use this persuasion technique effectively, your reputation must precede you. In some cases, when your appearance exudes authority, it becomes easier to persuade others.
Your capability will provide the assurance that others need to trust you. Once you have gained their trust, it will be easier to convince them to agree with you.
You can also utilize this principle to capitalize on people’s desire to be consistent. Start planting ideas and asking for small commitments. Let those small commitments turn into a habit. Then you will see that over time, the people you invested on will be more receptive of the deeper commitments you ask from them.
Another way to get people to say yes to you is by having them like you. It’s easy to do a favor for someone whom you are comfortable with.
So take the time to build and cultivate relationships. Give genuine compliments, find common ground, and get to know others. These will make you likable and even widen your network. Then it will be easier for others to say yes to you.
One of the reasons why decision-making is influenced by outside factors is because of the person’s indecisiveness. When a person experiences doubt, an immediate response is to look at what others are doing. Then they will conform to what they observe, or at least pattern their own decisions and actions on what they see from others.
These are the six universal principles that you can use as persuasion techniques. Not only are they practical and ethical, but you can also apply them without spending a single cent!

Young Girl With Big Dreams
Lessie Farriss is one of the Delegates set to attend the Congress of Future Medical Leaders. She is a student at Eugene Ashley High School in North Carolina.
When asked why she wants a career in the medical field, Lessie cites her dad’s influence. As a first responder, her dad’s work sparked her interest from a young age.

Lessie’s inclination to the medical field stayed with her as she got older. Over time, she learned more about what this career had to offer. And along the way, she discovered the beauty of medical research. Lessie is especially interested in critical care medicine.
As a high school student, Lessie juggles her academics and extra-curricular activity. She is part of their school’s cheerleading squad. Aside from that, she also studies in University of North Carolina Wilmington and Cape Fear Community College.
Through her school work, Lessie was able to take medical credits. This allowed her to deepen her understanding of medical research.
The National Academy of Future Physicians and Medical Scientists Congress Nomination
As a result of Lessie’s hard work and passion, she earned a nomination to the Congress. She was nominated by no less than Dr. Mario Capecchi, a Nobel Prize in Medicine recipient. Dr. Capecchi is also the National Academy of Future Physicians and Medical Scientists’ Science Director.
Lessie admits that before her nomination, she did not go after this opportunity. But once she received her invitation, she “got very excited” and realized the value of the Congress to her.
At the Congress, delegates like Lessie will learn from medical leaders and visionaries. They’ll meet National Medal of Science recipients, Nobel laureates, and medical school deans. They will even gain real-world experiences such as watching a surgery live.
The esteemed Congress speakers will also share the latest medical advancements. And they will inspire the delegates with their vision for the future of medical science.
Lessie will certainly have no shortage of opportunities to fuel her goal to be in medical research.
Lessie’s preparation for her future endeavors is sailing smooth. Several schools have already accepted her applications. But Lessie has narrowed down her three best choices. These are Duke University, The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and New York University.
She looks forward to delving deeper into medical studies once she goes to college. For Lessie, the Congress of Future Medical Leaders will give her a good head start on achieving her goals.

We hear people talking a big deal about what the word means, besides the regular dictionary definition. There are many ways to interpret the question, “What is courage?” Today, we’ll be narrowing down exactly what it means to someone like you, and how a little courage can help you live better.
What Is Courage | Knowing Your Strengths
Acting Beyond Fear
Courage means recognizing your fears but choosing to act anyway. We, as humans, find ourselves in situations where fear overtakes us. This fear, once it gets away from us, is debilitating. In times like these, making an action is the last thing on our minds. But courage is the will to face these fears and just do what needs to be done, despite your perceived limitations.
This, of course, is not an easy thing to do. But that’s what courage means: knowing, without a doubt, fears are meant to be overcome.
Trusting Your Gut
When asked “what is courage,” tell them that it’s all about trusting your gut. It takes a certain amount of fearlessness to trust one’s intuition. This doesn’t mean abandoning logic and reason for a simple “I’m sure this will work.” Of course not.
Trusting your intuition means you’ve looked at something from every angle, and you’re left with a few choices. Trusting your intuition means going with the choice that feels right to you, despite any naysayers. It takes courage to do something like that.
Standing Strong Against Adversity
It’s an inescapable fact that we will always find adversity no matter where we go. Your co-workers, friends, and family can sometimes be the very people who will stand against you, and some more than once. Courage means being able to stand your ground, despite the negative energy thrown at you.
It’s not something you develop immediately. When our decisions are met with adversity, we feel discouraged from going further. But, going against that current is a sign of courage. It is a quality that is innate in all of us, and is a perfect answer to the question, “what is courage?”
Doing the Right Thing
In our lives, there will come a time where we have to make a choice between doing the right thing, or something else. It’s not always easy to choose the “right” path. Granted, many people do not even know what the “right” path is. But as mentioned earlier, intuition is a very powerful thing. It is your moral compass and following your gut on what it thinks is the “right” thing to do takes courage.
Courage means doing the right thing, even if it puts you at a disadvantage, and even if it causes the people around you to think about you differently. It’s never an easy choice, but if you trust that it’s the right one, then it is. As Lao Tzu once said: “From caring comes courage.”
Trying New Things
It takes courage to try something new. Be it an exotic dish, a bungee jump, or considering a new career: trying something new is always a scary thing. Courage is mustering up the strength to take the leap into something new and unfamiliar. Courage means not sitting all your life in a comfort zone where you don’t take in new and exciting experiences.
We only have one life, and we owe it to ourselves to find the courage to expand our horizons. The world is both incredibly huge and infinitesimally small, and there’s so much exploring to be done. That’s why you should have the courage to explore what you don’t know – you’ll be missing out on so much.
Grace Under Pressure
Suffering is a part of life. It is one of the many constants in this world, like death and taxes. Courage means taking that suffering and bearing it with dignity. There is no shame in suffering, but there is something off about bemoaning it every chance you get. It’s okay to complain, but complaining too much gives off a feeling of helplessness on your part.
As long as you are human, you will experience some form suffering. Taking it in stride, however, is something that takes courage. There is something to be admired about a person who suffers quietly and puts on a strong front, despite the hurt they feel inside. Courageous people possess grace under pressure.

Cramming is not one of the smartest study methods out there since it negatively affects your body and brain functions — and eventually, your exam results. Study Tip #1: Identify your ideal study time
Not everyone has the inclination (and patience) to buckle down and study at any given time. You need to identify the best time when your attention and concentration for studying is at its peak. If you get sleepy very early at night, then maximize the morning or afternoon for studying. Or, if you are physically active and gets stressed during the day, then night studying might be for you. Identifying your best study time allows you to breeze through tedious tasks such as memorizing lectures or composing essays.
Study Tip #2: Prioritize difficult subjects when studying
Studying can be physically exhausting and mentally draining. Because of this, you must study the difficult topics first, then proceed with easier topics later on. This way, you can allot more energy on the subjects where you need to focus on the most. Your mind needs to process more information for more complex subjects, and so you need to start with these. Never mind if you have less energy for other subjects — at least you won’t be expending too much effort for easier topics. This scheme ensures you will cover all subjects you need for an upcoming exam.
Study Tip #3: Find a conducive place for studying
Environment plays a crucial factor in how we execute different tasks — including studying. Looking for a place that allows you to focus and concentrate fully on your academics will help you study effectively. Most of the time, this place needs to be quiet and organized, so there will be no distractions when you study.
Identifying a conducive place for studying may differ per person. Some people find it easier to study while watching TV at home or while having some snacks or coffee in a cafe. Others may prefer the usual quiet library. In any case, try to figure out a place that suits your personal study need.
Study Tip #4: Take a break and relax
Exhaustion from too much studying is not helpful as this will prevent your mind from absorbing all the information you need for an exam. Take an occasional break in between your study period. A good 5- to 10-minute break is already enough to rest your eyes from reading and your brain from taking in all information. If it will help, go out and do a short but fun diversion during your break time. Remember: you need to take your studies seriously but not at the expense of your health (or your sanity).

Apart from taking short breaks, a good, long sleep will help you condition your body and mind a day before an exam. A solid night’s sleep before an exam allows your brain to take a good break and prepare for the tedious mental activity the following day. This is the reason why cramming is bad for you — it stresses your body and mind the entire night, which in turn badly affects you come examination day. Studies show committing to an 8-hour sleep time will do the trick.
Study Tip #6: Eat properly
Proper nourishment is necessary for our body to perform different functions, including studying. Food serves as the fuel for both body and mind and will be helpful if you need that boost come exam day. Make sure to eat healthy food so as to provide you with the right nutrients you need. Researchers suggest food such as dark leafy vegetables and carbohydrates to serve as nourishment for your brain.

Finally, there’s no better way of preventing cramming than by studying way ahead of the exam day. Days before the exam, you definitely have a few ideas already as to the topics to be covered. Building Self-Esteem in a Nutshell
There are various situations that involve boosting confidence, and as a young professional, each scenario has a higher level of expectation than the usual. Maybe it’s a big exam, the SATs, or an athletic event. Who knows? But it’s a big deal, and you’re nervous, you lack super self-confidence, and you’re wondering what to do.
The answer is you’ve got to prime your mind. You’ve got to prime your mind and especially your subconscious mind for top confidence and performance. This is how you build your self-esteem and be confident in situations.
Recalling Past Experiences
Now let’s go to a more specific way on how to build confidence and self-esteem. One great way is to recall past successes. In other words, you want to fill your mind with things that have worked in the past. Maybe you’ve got a great athletic award that you won, or you did great on a chess competition or some race, something in the academic realm. It doesn’t matter. The key is you want to be thinking like a winner. To do that, it helps to remember when you were a winner.
Tip: Take a few minutes, sit down, and review that in your mind. Make a list of things you were great at and succeeded at in the past. This will have a positive impact on your subconscious mind and will help in boosting confidence.
Visual priming is the stimuli that helps you remember successes. If you have a trophy, a certificate, photos, or anything that helps you remember past successes, display those prominently so you see them every time you walk in the room. This will help your subconscious mind think of being a winner and naturally raise your self-confidence. It will also help all of the positive expressions, gene flow, and all of the rest that goes along with that.
Turning Anxiety into Enthusiasm
We all feel anxiety and what we try to do is calm ourselves down. But I’m going to tell you it’s the wrong technique. Instead of calming yourself down, which is going from here to here, I want you to go more horizontally. I want you to change that anxiety, convert it into a sense of excitement and enthusiasm. Don’t try and calm yourself down. Just try and say, as you’re feeling anxious, “Wow, I’m excited. I’m enthusiastic.” Amazingly, in many cases, that anxiety will begin to convert itself into what you want, which is positive energy.
Note: This is known as cognitive reassignment and it takes something you’re thinking and converts it into an emotion and changes it into another emotion. It doesn’t work 100% of the time, but when it does work, it’s pretty magical.
Doing Your Ritual
Next, confidence rituals, routines, and superstitions. Yes, you might have a favorite shirt, or a hat, or a talisman like a rabbit’s foot. Whatever those things are that make you feel lucky or were part of your past successes, a pair of shoes you wore when you won a competition, do it again. Believe it or not, that again helps your subconscious mind think of you as a winner and remember all the great things that you did before. It helps boost your confidence. Don’t think that those are childlike or silly.
Some of the biggest stars in the world are massively superstitious and they have to have just that one pair of underwear or socks or shirt, or whatever the case may be that they relate to as a winner. If you have those in your life, use them.
Setting Your Mood with Music
Music is incredibly powerful in affecting your mood. Before you go into that high-stress situation, play the music that brings you up. Put your headphones on, blast that music, create a playlist that’s all about uplifting, positive, “I-can-do-it” kind of music. Play that up to the very last second before this important task begins.
