Teenage ‘future doctor’ helps in Philippines

When 16-year old Benjamin Hyland of Sparta talked about his trip to the Philippines as part of a medical mission to help those in need, his compassion came clearly through. He said, “It was seeing after the surgery how I helped these people – the response made me want to become a surgeon. To help people like that with their problems.”

During his last visit, Ben actually observed all surgeries and assisted the surgeons in pre- and post-op prep, scrubbing in to assist in handing them appropriate instruments and other things. He also helped with triage and pre-surgical/diagnostic discussions, including where patients had to be given grave news about breast cancer and other diseases.
