Be polite and clear about what you are looking for; most people want to help and will direct you to the right place.

You Don’t Get In – Now What?

To get into a summer internship for high school students, you typically will have to complete an application and possibly an interview. There is competition for these spots so it is possible that you may not get admitted. While being overlooked may be disappointing, it does not mean that you cannot still get useful experience. You can create your own opportunity. Ask your own physician about shadowing opportunities; even if he or she is not available, your doctor often knows other doctors who might be. You can also ask a manager or the employment office at a company that you might be interested in observing about creating a position for you. Since this internship would be unpaid, these companies may be interested in bringing you in.

What Is a Mini-Medical School?

Mini-medical has more of an educational – or classroom-like – atmosphere and the other lectures are informational.

Different Mini-Medical School Programs

There are more than 70 of these programs in the United States. Some of them last for one day while others have several lectures over several months. Other programs include hands-on opportunities for the students to learn something about the medical field – either in clinical situations or in the lab. A few programs offer a residential component – like the University of Rochester or the University of Georgia — where the student spends time living on campus with a strict schedule which exposes the students to a variety of medical topics.  Drexel University College of Medicine offers several mini-medical school and mentoring programs for high school and college students who are interested in the medical field. The University of Kansas has developed a DVD kit that high school teachers can use to expose their students to science topics.

The costs of these programs vary; some lectures are free, but other programs may be more expensive. There is often financial aid available for students who need it and who are especially interested in the program and in medicine in general.

The traditional route of medicine is through four years of college and four years of medical school. During this path, the student has more time to explore career options and live with the undergraduate experience.

However, there are some programs that allow you to combine college and medical school into a shorter program meaning you would apply for college and medical school together. This option is very competitive and it only works for students who are 100% convinced that medicine is their lifelong passion.

If you decide to try for a combined program, you have to make that decision early in your high school career. This comes back to getting exposure early to the medical sciences. If high-achieving students do not learn about their options, they can’t make the necessary plans to apply for a combined program or even to apply to a traditional medical school.
